The Boss of Me

by Cathy Beaudette

From the moment of birth the space between child and parent increases. Part of the work of a child is to establish his/her own identity. All children pass through the stage of developing their own autonomy. The phrase “you are not the boss of me” has appeared in novels, movies, television programs and from the mouths of our own babes. Sometimes the establishment of autonomy has results that are far from satisfactory but hopefully children learn some valuable life lessons and parents learn to let go.

Cathy Beaudette

Cathy Beaudette spent 32 years as an educator in both the elementary and secondary school systems. She has degrees in psychology and education with specialist certificates in Primary Education, and Special Education. Most importantly she is a parent of two grown children who were the inspiration for this story. Some of the events actually did occur while they were growing up. Now happily retired she enjoys watching her grandson exercise his own autonomy.
