State of the Species

(An Ethological Perspective) by Scott Lawson

State of the Species is about the state we are in as a species, first from the perspective of our very nature, that is, who and what we are, and secondly from a historical perspective, in that we are in the state we are due to our historical legacy, what we've done throughout our history on the planet. The book goes on to chart a future course, one that will ensure our survival and our very viability as an evolving natural entity. It is a treatise on what we are, what we've done, and where we go from here.

Born late in the baby-boom generation, I grew up in the Pacific Northwest. I became politically aware on my 9th birthday when Bobby Kennedy was assasinated, which marks the beginning of my critical thinking, the beginning of my having an opinion about the world and our place in it. I began reading philosophy at age 18, branched out into other disciplines, and began writing all my complete thoughts down as they came to me, which eventually became the material for State of the Species. I started hiking solo into the rainforest and the mountains when I was 25, and everything I learned there made me hyper-aware of both the environment and our own nature, providing the true inspiration for this book. It seemed vitally important to me that I share my spiritual and natural revelations from communing with life forces that were among the oldest on planet earth. I've attempted to trace our history back to our origins as a species and carry forward the wisdom we've accrued through the ages to guide us into the future. I hope it is both thought provoking and pleasurable to read.
