Blinky and the Phone Fiasco
A Family Guide to Screentime Limits by Tripler Pell

Tripler Pell, MD, MSc is a family physician, medical school teacher, and academic researcher with international experience. She is also an active mother of three, and most recently the author of a light-hearted children’s story pertaining to a health topic with widespread relevance: small children and the use of wireless devices.

The book is meant to be a fun and entertaining story for children under age 8. It is also a useful way for parents and small children to engage together in setting limits and explore the meaning of a healthy lifestyle. In addition, a separate section at the end of the book provides simple suggestions on how parents can make screentime safer.

“A very timely book, sure to be read and read again by children and parents alike. Dr. Pell’s funny, silly tale will appeal to children and surely spark some thoughtful discussions about technology use. Her ideas, expertise and advice for parents make this book a must-have for those of us who grapple with the growing place of new media devices in family life.”

— Debra Stein, MD, FRCPC, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist

“Working in a primary classroom in this age of ever advancing technology, I often find

my 6 year old students to be more tech savvy than I am. The benefits of technology

in the classroom are numerous and it is easy to get caught up in the newest app. With

this book I am able to positively introduce the idea of responsibly balancing time on

technology with my students, as well as their parents. It is a fun and accessible way spark

conversations and remind ourselves the importance of stopping to smell the roses.”

— Christie Gordon, teacher Upper Canada College

“In this accessible and lighthearted book, Dr. Pell sounds the alarm on the effects of

the mobile media pandemic on children, and offers sensible ways to address it.”

— Alexander Westphal, MD, PhD. Yale School of Medicine

“I think we all know a stormy Blinky or two; help is at hand! This sweet tale reminds us that the

screens do indeed obscure the stars. Parents take heart: the answer is right in our own backyards.

Blinky is lucky to have parents who know the difference between a phone and a boy.”

— Elizabeth Boyden, teacher St. Clement’s School
